In the heart of Guatemala’s rich cultural landscape, sign language has emerged as the official language for Deaf people—one that speaks through gestures, expressions, and conceptual conveyance. LENSEGUA, the Guatemalan sign language, weaves a tapestry of connection within the deaf community, offering a means to bridge the gap between silence and expression.
Developed over years of dedication and collaboration, LENSEGUA is a testament to the resilience of Guatemala’s deaf population. Rooted in local culture, this language transcends barriers, unlocking avenues for communication and understanding that go beyond spoken words.
The turning point came in January 2020 when the Guatemalan Congress officially adopted LENSEGUA. This landmark decision not only recognized the language’s significance but also marked a profound step towards inclusivity and recognition of the deaf community’s needs.
LENSEGUA’s official adoption is only the first step in fostering an inclusive society where every voice is heard. Latin Deaf Services, Inc has been involved in and advocating for LENSEGUA since 2016 and today continues to be on the forefront of instruction in and certification of LENSEGUA interpreters. In fact, Latin Deaf Services, Inc. has been commissioned by the National Association to develop all evangelical Biblical Signs for LENSEGUA.
As this language continues to shape connections and bridge gaps, let’s celebrate the opportunity to further the Gospel that LENSEGUA symbolizes. 🤟🇬🇹 #LENSEGUA #InclusivityMatters
